AliExpress (Chinese: 全球速卖通) is an online retail service company based in China, owned by Alibaba Group. Launched in 2010, the company is made up of small businesses in China and other locations such as Singapore, offering products to international online buyers. It is the most visited e-commerce website in Russia and the tenth most popular website in Brazil. It facilitates small businesses to sell products to customers around the world. AliExpress is compared to eBay because sellers are independent and use the platform to offer products to buyers.
AliExpress started out as a B2B buying and selling portal. It has since expanded to include B2C, C2C, cloud computing, and payment services. As of 2016, AliExpress operates sites in English, Spanish, Korean, Dutch, French, Italian, German, Polish, Turkish, Portuguese, Indonesian, Russian, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Japanese, Thai, and other languages – English is the default language for countries other than the above. AliExpress is often used by e-commerce stores that adopt the dropshipping business model.
Sellers on AliExpress can be companies or individuals. AliExpress is different from Amazon in that it is just an e-commerce platform and does not sell products directly to consumers. It directly connects Chinese businesses with buyers.
Although most of the retailers are Chinese, AliExpress targets international import buyers and does not sell products to customers in mainland China.
