A Facebook user, Karl Warffles, revealed on the 2nd of this month in the “B40 Buat Perangai Apa Harini” group that when he spent RM22 to buy items at a pet store and checked out, the clerk did not allow him to pay with a debit card.

The store said that if the purchase amount is less than RM100, debit cards will not be accepted. Debit cards can only be used when the purchase amount exceeds RM100.

He tried to explain to the cashier in the store about Bank Negara's rules on debit cards, but the cashier kept distracting him and he lost patience in arguing.

Later, when I lodged a complaint with BNM, it was because I wanted to use my debit card to pay for purchases below RM99 at 5 Speedmart, so why not here?

This post has sparked discussion among netizens. Some netizens explained that when consumers use debit cards to make purchases, stores need to pay fees to the relevant banks. Therefore, many stores may increase the prices of goods in order to earn more fees.
