A man was three months in arrears with his rent. When the owner came to collect the debt, he locked himself in the house. However, he did not have enough money to recharge his mobile phone and was unable to call for help. Eventually, he starved to death at home.
A case occurred in an apartment unit in Damansara, Petaling Jaya on the 23rd of last month. Lawyer Yu Jianzhong mentioned in an interview with a reporter from Oriental Daily that the deceased was discovered by his neighbors three days after his death, emitting a foul smell.
He said the deceased was an e-hailing driver who was said to have been in arrears with rent for three months. It is said that the owner locked the house for a month last month. However, he did not have enough money to recharge his mobile phone to call for help. Eventually, he starved to death because he didn't get help.
When the deceased's body was discovered, he had become skinny and skinny, and his body and appearance were significantly different from those before his death.
Yu Jianzhong said that the family of the deceased has appointed him as the representative lawyer to sue the landlord and seek justice for the deceased. He said that he was not sure whether the landlord knew that the tenant was still in the house when he locked the house, but even if the tenant defaulted on the rent, there were other solutions instead of locking the unit, which could lead to a murder.
Lawyer Yu Jianzhong advises landlords that if they encounter problems with tenants defaulting on rent, they can apply to the Small Claims Court for resolution instead of locking the tenants in the house.
He said this was the first time he had encountered such a case, so he hoped that the public could take this case as a lesson to avoid similar incidents from happening again.
However, as of now, the Lingcheng police have not made any public statements or conversations about the case.
