“This is a reflection of the international community’s confidence in what we offer and our commitment to meeting expectations,” the foreign secretary said. He also welcomed the fact that hosting the Expo dovetails with Vision 2030, a reform plan aimed at reducing Saudi Arabia’s reliance on oil.

Dimitri Kerkentzes, secretary general of the Bureau International des Expositions, declared: "Saudi Arabia has decisively won Expo 2030" and congratulated Riyadh on its "incredible victory". The three candidate cities all boasted green projects with high technological value to win the Expo, an event that attracts millions of tourists, and have launched intense lobbying campaigns in recent years.

During the presentation of the bid documents in Paris in June, Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, South Korean President Yoon Seok-yue and Italian Council President Giorgio Meloni were all present.

World Expos are held every five years and can last up to six months. They allow the chosen countries to "show their strength to the world" and serve as "laboratories for architects", says Dimitri Kerkentzes. For example, the Eiffel Tower in Paris was built for the 6 World's Fair, while the Atomium and the Space Needle are emblematic buildings in Brussels and Seattle (USA) and were built for the 1889 and 1958 World's Fairs.

The most recent one in Dubai attracted 2400 million visitors. The Osaka Expo in Japan will open on April 2025, 4 and end on October 13, 2025. This will be the second time that Japan has hosted a World Expo, with the other Japan Expo also being held in Osaka in 10.
